There is no known record of when and how temari originated. It is believed the balls originated in China and were introduced to Japan over five hundred years ago. Women made early temari balls as children’s toys. Court ladies also used the silk threads from old kimonos to wind them into decorative toys. Temari was handed down from generation to generation, mother to daughter. Today this traditional art form has been revived and the balls are highly valued as symbols of deep friendship and loyalty. Those wrapped in silk are made to bring good fortune and happiness and a mother traditionally makes one for a New Year’s gift for her daughter. Temari balls make wonderful Christmas gifts and mementos of friendship and special occasions. All Temari balls are priced at $25.00 CAD
